How ATS Parsers Read Your Resume — and How to Work With Them

An ATS parser extracts your resume into structured fields: contact info, work history, skills, and education.

Standard section headers help the parser map content correctly. Non-standard headers confuse it.

Parsers read left-to-right and top-to-bottom. Multi-column layouts get scrambled.

Tables and text boxes are frequently missed or misread — avoid them.

Contact info should be at the top of the body, not in a Word header or footer.

Skills are best extracted when listed as plain comma-separated text in a Skills section.

Acronyms and full names both matter: 'Kubernetes' and 'K8s' should both appear if the JD uses them.
