How to Test Your Resume Against ATS Before Applying

You can and should test your resume's ATS compatibility before sending it out.

Paste test: Copy your resume text into Notepad or a plain-text editor. If sections read correctly in order, parsing will likely work.

Check for images and text boxes: if critical info lives inside them, the ATS can't read it.

Verify standard section headers: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills — the ATS maps these.

Search for all JD keywords in your resume text (Ctrl+F). Missing keywords lower your score.

Use an ATS score checker tool that mimics real parsing and scoring.

Test the file type: DOCX is the safest. If using PDF, ensure it's text-based, not scanned.

Run these checks on every tailored version — a small formatting change can break parsing.
