Resume File Name Tips — How to Name Your Resume File

Your resume's file name is the first thing a recruiter or ATS sees. Make it professional and informative.

Best format: 'FirstName_LastName_Resume' — e.g., 'Jane_Smith_Resume.docx'.

Add the target role or company for stronger matching: 'Jane_Smith_ProductManager_Google.docx'.

Avoid generic names like 'resume_final_v3_REAL.docx' or 'untitled.pdf' — they look sloppy.

Avoid special characters and spaces when possible (some systems mangle them). Use underscores.

Use DOCX unless the application specifies otherwise. PDF preserves formatting but can fail older ATS.

For a version control tip: keep 'Jane_Smith_Resume.docx' as your master file and regenerate per application.

Check the uploaded name in the portal — some systems keep the original filename, so make it count.
