Resume Objective vs Summary — Which Should You Use?

The summary and objective both sit at the top of your resume, but they serve different purposes.

A professional summary focuses on what you offer: your experience, key skills, and headline achievements.

An objective focuses on what you want: your career goals and the type of role you're seeking.

Recommendation for most job seekers: use a professional summary. It tells recruiters what you bring, not what you want.

Example summary: 'Full-stack engineer with 6 years of experience building scalable products in React, Node.js, and AWS. Reduced infrastructure costs 40% while serving 1M+ users.'

Use an objective only in specific cases: career changers, recent grads, or internships where you have little experience to summarize.

Example objective: 'Recent CS graduate seeking a frontend engineering role where I can apply React and UX skills to build user-centered products.'

Never use both, and never use a vague objective like 'Seeking a challenging position that utilizes my skills.'
